Reporting to the Housing First Team Leader, Canada summer jobs role will be responsible for the successful day-to-day operations of the YAC including supporting drop-in programming, youth accessing services, and youth residing at the Cornerstone, 340 Richmond and Joan’s Place. Qualified candidates possess exceptional communication and de-escalation skills, work well in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, and hold values that support our corporate vision of being “A community where youth are embraced and will thrive”.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates daily programming in accordance with the standards policies and procedures of the Youth Action Centre
  • Planning summer celebration events.
  • Working in collaboration with community partners to address the needs of youth who have experienced homelessness and trauma; provide appropriate community referrals and support to participants
  • Working from a harm reduction model, to support participants who may choose to use substances
  • Utilize successful de-escalation strategies to support youth experiencing trauma, mental health, or behavioral challenges in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching on life skills; including engaging youth in regular cleaning of living space
  • Responsible for conducting security checks and identifying safety and security needs
  • Receive, sort, and organize donations from the community
  • Assist and maintain the general cleanliness of the YAC including keeping workspaces tidy, laundering of linens, distributing food for food service, cleaning up, and ensuring all supplies are available

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work days, evenings, and weekends
  • Current Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • First Aid /CPR certification required, Suicide Prevention, Crisis Intervention, and Prevention Training (PMAB or CPI) is an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 including SharePoint, Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Should be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment. The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa, or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labor market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labor market.

Job Type: Internship / Co-op

Contract length: 8 weeks

Pay:$17.00 per hour

  • Evening shift
  • Weekends as needed
